Do not confuse their name Miniature Japanese Chin with their place of origin, for they did not originate in Japan. Their origins started in Korea. The breed was later developed in Japan. Around the 1700′s the breed was introduced to Europe. These dogs were often the favorite of the Japanese Court. They were frequently offered as a royal gift. In 1853, after returning from his historical mission of opening Japan to foreign trade, Commodore Perry presented Queen Victoria with a pair as a gift. In 1977 the Japanese Spaniel was renamed the Japanese Chin.

Miniature Japanese Chins have silky, straight and profuse long hair. Their coloring is usually black and white or white and black. You will find a few that are red and white or sable and white. They have a heavily feathered tail that curls upward over their backs to the floor. They are considered a head breed, because they have a slightly oversize head. They are also known for their Buddha’s thumbprint. Which is a white hourglass shaped patch of hair over their face and skull. This designation is attributed to the Emperor Ming of Han, who had owned several of these dogs.

Grooming a Miniature Japanese Chin takes a few minutes everyday. This will help keep the coat looking beautiful, comb out any tangles and keep the hair from matting. It will be necessary to clean their eyes and check their ears daily. Bathe only when necessary, and use a dry shampoo on occasion. This makes their upkeep simple and easy.
